Carnival
It was the period of nature’s awakening, back after the long winter. People worked but they also knew how to have fun. It was the time people would let their hair down. During Carnivaltime people dressed up, the magnin, and the elderly also had fun. It was custom that the ladies of the various farmhouses prepared large quantities of agnolotti (home made filled pasta) that were then eaten by the men in a sort of home to home pilgrimage where an excess of wine was also drunk. Men also dressed up and played jokes. Groups of youngsters dressed up as magnin covered in soot pretended to repair pans with the fortcoming grand Sunday dinner in mind.

On 19th August in ancient Romethe “vinalia rustica” were celebrated. During this event a first harvest was carried out by Hupiter’s priest to which the proper grape harvest followed.
